INTRO TO CLAIRE GUEST AND HER WORK
I've been working as a sculptor for twenty years, however I first exhibited as a student in Northern Young Contempories at Manchester in 1982. I live on the edge of the East Anglian fens in England. I've exhibited at the Barbican and the Royal Institute of British Architects in London. My bog oak sculptures were showcased at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Crafts Council. My sculptures are on public display in Britain and in private collections throughout the world. My work was commissioned to commemorate the tercentenary of William and Marys' accession and presented to Queen Beatrix, Netherlands. I've worked in places as varied as the Tower of London, Country Parks, St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, Art Centres, Bourne Wood and Peterborough District Hospital. I've exhibited across Britain and Germany in galleries and museums.

SUMMARY
This an introduction to a cross section of my sculpture. All the materials are sourced locally. I use traditional methods, the process of making is transparent in the finished work. They can be displayed outside, however the smaller pieces are more appropriate inside private homes. I love to carve the bog oak which is about 8000 years old, extremely hard, durable and almost black from being compressed for thousands of years in the fens under the sea. I enjoy working to commission for both private individuals and public authorities. This site is divided into three galleries to show my distinct methods of working. I hope you enjoy looking through my web pages and gain an insight into the enthusiasm and passion, as you explore it, that created these sculptures.

GALLERY 1
The bog oak crows and rooks developed together. The colour, age and intransigence of the bog oak matched the colour, history/myths and nature of the crows and rooks. In 1993 I worked with the Tower of London and Harbinger School. I made my first raven then, it is now in California USA. The second raven pictured here was made from my drawings and one of the stories from the raven master. Over twenty years the characters of the crows and rooks have melded together with my growing knowledge of the bog oak. In July 2004 I had an article in The Times on my bog oak crows and rooks, the image used is the first pcture in the gallery. MORE >>

GALLERY 2
This displays five very different sculptures in scale and medium. The butting pregnant goat is slightly larger than life size and carved from bog oak. It is jointed and bolted together. The free standing cat mask is also carved from bog oak. The running squirrel was carved from a fallen birch in Parndon Wood, Harlow. The neolithic sheep and hand boulder are made from concrete composites applied directly to a metal frame. They were made with art foundation students and are permenantly sited at Flag Fen, a bronze age settlement near Peterborough. MORE >>

Together the reliefs slot together to create a semi-oval "wood henge". The reliefs are carved in willow and oak. The theme through out is the elements earth, air, fire and water each vertical relief also depicts a specific place in England. A set of reliefs were bought and are permenantly displayed in the entrance foyer of the Henley Centre, Kettering. I've used a mixture of techniques and mediums to colour the wood which is permenant.
